CHAPTER 20

CELIA

She was starving. She should have taken a fucking apple when she’d had the chance. It was bad enough that she was stuck in this chair. Her legs and arms were sore, and she didn’t know how much longer she could stay upright. If she fell, she was dead, so she forced herself to endure, minute by minute. If she told herself she had to hold out for another twenty minutes, it was impossible. But one minute? She could do one minute. And then another, and another.

At least she wasn’t tired. She’d never felt more awake in her life, but that had the downside of making time seem to slow down. She had unlimited time to think, and she realized that was probably what Ivan had wanted.

He wanted her to let all the bullshit he’d said worm its way through her mind, infecting her. He wanted her to think he was right, and then he’d kill Haller, and she’d wonder if maybe Ivan had been right all along. But she knew that was a load of shit. She wanted to be with Haller, and even though she didn’t know if she believed in the whole “mate” thing, if she had a mate, it definitely was Haller. Ivan wouldn’t take that from her, and she’d never be grateful to him.

Another minute passed, and then another.

She tried to think of what their future would be like. If she died here, at least she wouldn’t have died single. Their marriage may have started off fake, but now it felt more real than anything. It anchored her. Okay, maybe anchored was a poor choice of word while she was tied down to a chair with a grenade hanging on a rope below her. Her marriage was the best thing she had, and she didn’t want herself or Haller to die without getting to say that to him. She at least wanted that much.

And then the door swung open.

Ivan stomped in with Haller slung over his shoulder. Ivan’s shirt was soaked black with blood, and Haller was dripping wet with it.

“You fucker!” she screamed. “You fucking piece of shit!”

She reflexively tried to stand, and the chair tipped. It wasn’t a little bit of a tip where she had a chance to recover from the fall. It was a full-on tip, and her shoulder slammed into the ground.

How long did she have until the grenade went off? Five seconds? Would she at least take Ivan out with her? All three of them dying was better than Ivan getting his way.

Five seconds passed. Then ten. She didn’t breathe.

Ivan tossed Haller down onto the ground and then reached down where the grenade was. He held an orange out to Celia’s face.

“The grenade is still in the bottom of the fruit bowl,” he said. “You were afraid of an orange.”

“Haller,” she said, not even feeling relief at being alive.

“He’s alive,” Ivan said, “for now. What did you think about in those moments? When you thought you would die?”

She glared up at him.
